In may 1940 the German army was not successfull in the Netherlands while its main forces attacked in the Ardennes. The agressor was stopped at the Afsluitdijk; dropped soldiers near The Hague were taken prisoners; the river in Rotterdam could not be crossed and still there was the Waterlinie barrier. Then the Nazi regime applied terror and bombed civilian areas in Rotterdam, threatening to do so also in Utrecht. This was a war crime, not to be registered as genocide. Berlin feared that British troops might reinforce the Vesting Holland and use it as a base, not far from the industrial Ruhrgebiet.
The Dutch government considered that the strong French army soon would halt the Germans and drive them back. The conflict did not regard so much the state of the Netherlands and it seemed wise to limit loss of lives and goods by finishing armed resistance since expectations were that soon the agressor had to draw back.
Presently the Russians are thought not to bother much about a percent more or less of their vast territory, but one man, a dictator started the war with Oekraine. Generating terrible losses on both sides. That man will dy in a couple of years or be put in prison by the Russians themselves. So the question arises whether it is wise to cede temporarily part of the Oekraine country where many Russians live and stop hostilities. Later borders again may be readjusted. Which by the way will be easy if Moscow becomes afraid of China and seeks friendship with NATO.
Today Rotterdam has become key harbour for military transports from the USA to Europe and after a Russian h-bomb will have been dropped on it Paris and London shall hurry to the negotiation table since more distructed cities are not desirable. That 's why The Hague may leave NATO. The world gains when the area of potential nuclear conflict is reduced and this is valid also for Scandinavia. Our planet suffers from too many people. General DNA-registration is necessary to take sanctions on surpopulation. This helps to reduce spending on war business and raise wellfare.
